Skincare routine changes you need to be aware of
Cancer Care23rd March 2024
It’s important to adapt your skincare routine when you start receiving treatment for cancer. Here are 3 of the most important differences you need to be aware of:
Avoid essential oils
It’s important to check to see if essential oils are an ingredient in the products you use.
Essential oils can cause skin irritations if the skin is sensitive, and some may find the scents too overpowering. There hasn't been enough research into the effects of using essential oils systemically while people are on medication.
This is why we recommend you avoid using it, so you don’t risk causing harm or discomfort.
Make sure you apply SPF
Every day, even if it’s not sunny.
Everyone should wear at least factor 30 SPF every day if possible. If you are going through chemotherapy, the skin can become photosensitive, so it is very important to protect the delicate skin with an SPF. Remember to reapply every 2 hours.
To ensure your skin is protected, apply at least factor 30 SPF every day.
Be gentle
We recommend you avoid exfoliation while receiving treatment.
Exfoliation can be very harsh, especially if someone's skin has become sensitive from medical treatment. Instead, use soothing gentle moisturisers that are fragrance-free, to keep the skin nourished and protected. We recommend avoiding physical scrubs such as sugar or salt on the face or body, or using any chemical or resurfacing peels on the face.
If you are booking a facial or body scrub with someone not trained in cancer safe treatments, request gentle products made for hypersensitive skin.
