How we make sure our treatments are cancer safe
Cancer Care

If you have had lymph nodes removed or are undergoing cancer treatment, you can absolutely have a massage! It is essential to see a therapist trained in oncology massage. Even if your lymph nodes were removed, radiated, or biopsied over a decade ago and you are no longer receiving cancer treatment, the massage should still be performed with the same care. At Parsley Spa, we offer two specialized techniques to support those who have had lymph nodes removed or are currently undergoing cancer treatment.

Our lymphatic system functions as the body's sewage system, with lymph fluid carrying toxins that need to be flushed out through the lymph nodes.

During a massage, our therapists always work towards the nearest lymph nodes to assist with drainage and encourage the fluid to move where it should. When lymph nodes have been removed, radiated, or biopsied, the therapist should direct movements away from the affected nodes towards unaffected ones. This approach ensures that we do not put excessive pressure on the affected area and that the lymph fluid is filtered efficiently.

If you opt for a manual lymphatic drainage massage, you will notice it is very gentle. This is because the lymphatic system lies just beneath the skin's surface. Medium pressure targets the muscles, while firm pressure reaches deeper into the muscles and connective tissue.

For those who have had lymph nodes removed, radiated, or biopsied, we recommend a medium pressure. This level of pressure focuses on the muscle and minimizes stimulation of the lymphatic system compared to lighter treatments. We also advise against firm pressure, as it can be overly stimulating.

We recommend avoiding massage tools in the affected area, such as hot stones or bamboo, as the pressure and heat can be too stimulating.

Another technique we offer is touch therapy. While it is light, it does not stimulate the lymphatic system. Instead, it employs very slow movements and the power of touch to promote a deep state of relaxation, calming the nerve endings and bringing you into a parasympathetic state. This technique is perfect for someone sensitive to touch who wants to feel held and nurtured.

If you are undergoing chemotherapy, the best time to schedule a treatment is just before you go to the hospital. This timing can help calm your thoughts or anxieties before receiving medication and eliminates the need to reschedule your appointment if you experience symptoms and do not feel up to having the treatment in the week following chemotherapy.

We always conduct a thorough consultation with you before your treatment to understand how you are feeling. We tailor the treatment based on your needs and preferences. If there is anything we can do to make you more comfortable, please let us know so we can adjust accordingly.

I hope this information has been helpful. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We would be more than happy to assist you.
